Listen, your Christmas photos don’t have to be red and green with gingham outfits, picture-perfect smiles, and traditional decor. While that’s adorable and all, the most important part of a photoshoot is making sure it actually feels like you. So, take this blog post as your sign to infuse some personality in your session. Add some funk, some quirkiness, some zest!! Need Christmas photo ideas? You know I gotchu! Check out these retro Christmas pictures from a mini-session I hosted as a Knoxville photographer. They’re the perfect mix of fun and eccentric with a touch of nostalgic Christmas joy, and if you’re anything like me (a little nontraditional and a little unorthodox), you’ll absolutely LOVE them.

Retro Christmas Pictures: The Mini-Session by a Knoxville Photographer
These minis?? LOVEEE!! The vintage 90’s Christmas morning vibes were complete with disco balls, records, a hella fun playlist, and tinsel everywhere. And this day called for shooting with direct flash and fun posing, which always makes some of my fave photos!!
I wanted to make sure to include props that kept things interesting and that could fit anyone’s shoot, like Santa hats, nostalgic Christmas albums, mistletoe, and presents, because as a Knoxville photographer, I know that photoshoots (even mini sessions!) aren’t one size fits all.
It was important to me to create a world for these minis; something that truly felt like you were traveling back in time to waking up on Christmas day in 1995. I had so much fun creating this concept!
And the energy in the room? Unhinged in the BEST way. Music loud enough to loosen everyone up, zero awkward silences, and a whole lot of “WAIT, you look so good right there, don’t move.” That’s always the goal for me, even with mini sessions. You shouldn’t feel rushed or stiff; you should walk out thinking, “Wait… that was actually fun as hell!!”

Why Retro Christmas Pictures Make the Perfect Christmas Photo Ideas for You
Whether it’s family photos or couples photos, for a Christmas card or just for fun, these retro minis make the PERFECT Christmas photo ideas. If you’re here, you probably already know that your Christmas photos don’t have to be cookie-cutter (and just know that I’m literally obsessed with you). And these retro Christmas pictures? Anything but boring!!
So, if you’re the type of person who wants professionally taken photos captured that actually show off your personality, or you want to freeze family moments in time (in a way that isn’t boring), or you just want to document the joy of the holiday season with a super fun photoshoot, you’re in the right place!!

Who Should Take Retro Christmas Pictures? (Hint: They’re Not Just for Families!)
Whatever you’re coming for, I’m sooo on board. If it’s just a self-love session, I love that for you. If it’s your Christmas card photos with the whole fam, let’s do it!! There are no rules here!!
Solo? Hot.
Couples? Obsessed.
Boudoir? Say less.
If the idea of being told exactly where to stand makes you want to crawl out of your skin, you’re my people. There are zero rules here, just good energy, good music, and FUN!!

What to Wear to Your Retro Christmas Pictures
So many clients asked me about what to wear to this session. Since it’s not your run-of-the-mill Christmas photoshoot, I was all about self-expression. I encouraged clients to lean into 90s vibes with things like mixed patterns, tacky sweaters, casual jeans, or even vintage fringe dresses. These minis were all about having fun, so the key is to do that all the way down to your outfit!!
Looking for exact fits? I gotchu. Here are some links to items that would look killer for retro Christmas pictures:
- The Cheetah Faux Fur Coat from Straight to Hell Apparel
- The Velvet Wide Leg Pants from Revolve
- The Disco Fever Sequin Trousers by Lala
- The Fringe Mini Dress from Show Me Your Mumu
- The Holly Jolly Sweater by KJP (for peak ’90s-goodness pair it with some Levi’s 501 jeans)
And if you need some help choosing the fit, that’s what I’m here for! I’ll help you create a vibe that makes you feel confident, so that when you get there and I’m hyping you UP, you’ll feel it.
