Girl, it’s 2026. That means that your wedding?? It can be WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT IT TO BE!! Your day-of wedding timeline doesn’t have to be get ready, do a first look, take pictures, do your ceremony, then start dancing. Those days are overrrr.
If you’re someone who hates rules and expectations, we’re gonna be best friends, because SAME, queen. As a Knoxville wedding photographer, my whole approach to weddings can be summed up in three words: fuck the rules!!! So if you’re dreaming of a day that’s a little non-traditional and a whole lotta YOU, check out my guide on how to create a day-of wedding timeline that actually works for you.

Before Creating Your Day-Of Wedding Timeline…
Okay, queen, before you jump right into creating your timeline, pull it back. You’ve gotta figure out what your main priorities for the day are first!! Here’s everything to think about before you start throwing numbers around:
- How do you want to feel at the end of your wedding day? Relaxed? Excited? Sleepy? Drunk AF?? Love that for you.
- How many people do you actually want at your wedding? Not how many people do you feel like you should invite, but how many people do you want?
- Photos – what are the moments that you want preserved the most? Maybe it’s your editorial couples portraits, maybe it’s the little candid moments happening all around you, or maybe it’s a little bit of both. Whatever it is, make that your priority, babes!!
- FOOD. Because trust me, you don’t want to be hangry on your wedding day. And as a Knoxville wedding photographer, I know that if you don’t plan food, it won’t happen.
- Do you want to have a first look with your partner? This one is fully up to what you prefer, but I’m ALWAYS down for one. It always gives me chills because of the romance in those moments. PHEW!!
- What traditions are you keeping, and which ones are you trashing? Think about things like special dances, bouquet tosses, cake cutting… The list goes on, but only keep what makes sense for you and feels true to you.

Sample Day-Of Wedding Timelines That Make Sense for the Couple Who Hates Expectations
Every wedding day is completely different (and I love that so much), so different timelines will work for different kinds of days. I’ll throw around a few that make sense for different flows, and fill them all with TONS of ideas that are creative and maybe a little wild. You know I gotchu!!
A Sample Wedding Timeline For an Elopement
If you’re choosing a day for just the two of you, I love that. Elopements are a little different to plan since there are so many location options and legal rules, but this timeline should work pretty well, no matter your vision!!
9:00 am: Start getting ready (and eat a small breakfast, trust me).
11:00 am: Do a quick, simple first look and private vows with your partner.
11:30 am: Take all the couples portraits your little heart desires (I love the Knoxville city streets for these, there are SO many good spots)!!
12:30 pm: Hold your ceremony, start forever… You know, casual stuff.
1:00 pm: Grab a celebratory lunch. This can be with just your partner, or you guys can invite some of your people!! If you’re in Knox, I recommend The Kennedy every time.
2:30 pm on: The limit does not exist; spend the rest of your day doing whatever you want!! Leaving for your honeymoon? Hell yeah. Going bowling in your elopement outfits? LOVE.
Obviously, take what you need here. If you’re choosing a mountain sunrise elopement (let me comeee!), you’ll need to shift this a few hours earlier and maybe swap a few things. If you’re getting married at City Hall, you might have a set ceremony appointment time that you need to plan around.
If you’re looking for nontraditional, unique elopement inspo, you know I’ve gotchu!! Check out Chloe and Angela’s funky, Valentine’s-themed elopement for the non-traditional day of my DREAMS.

A Sample Wedding Timeline For an Intimate Ceremony + Separate Reception
A small ceremony and big reception is ALWAYSSS one of my favorite wedding day layouts!! I love the break in the day that lets you actually take time to connect and breathe for a little bit. Here’s my personal favorite way to do this as a Knoxville wedding photographer:
8:00 am: Get ready + eat breakfast.
11:00 am: First look and private vows!! YAY!!
11:30 am: Couples portraits (and family portraits, and wedding party portraits… If that’s your thing).
1:00 pm: Ceremony time!!
1:30 pm: Lunch
2:30 pm: Head back to your hotel for some (romantic AF) quality time and some rest
3:30 pm: Start getting ready for your reception (a dress change is always a must!!)
5:00 pm: Dance the night away to your hella hype playlist with all your fave people at your reception venue.

A Sample Wedding Timeline for a Ceremony + Reception
While this is the most traditional layout of a wedding day, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to be basic or boring, TRUST ME. Here’s my take on how to do this kind of day right:
10:00 am: Mimosas and getting ready with your girls!! And brunch here? A must.
1:00 pm: First look, private vows, and couples portraits
1:45 pm: To spice things up, go to a different location here and take more couples photos + wedding party photos. A fun trip with your besties plus variety in your gallery?? Sign me TF up!!!
3:00 pm: Get back to the venue and hide away with your partner before your ceremony entrance. This gives you the chance to feel all the excited feelings together and actually take some time to breathe, and it takes SO much stress off of the next little bit.
4:00 pm: CEREMONY TIMEEE!!
4:30 pm: A cocktail hour, but like, one you actually get to go to and enjoy.
5:30 pm: Reception entrance + special dances, if you’re doing them!!
6:00 pm: Dinner that you actually get to eat.
7:30 pm: DANCE FLOOR TIMEEE!! Reception dress not required, but always encouraged!!
A couple that did this type of day well was Brittnie and Matt. Their Renaissance-themed wedding lives rent-free in my brain!! I’ll NEVER stop being obsessed with it.

How Mitch and Darby Created a Day-Of Wedding Timeline That Was SO Them
Mitch and Darby weren’t letting rules stop them from enjoying their day, and that’s literally all I EVER want for my couples. These two took what they wanted and left what they didn’t, and the result was a wedding day that felt SO true to them!!
They said “I do” in a small, private ceremony inside a downtown Knoxville Airbnb, and it was the BEST time. Doing this lets them really feel all of their emotions, and isn’t that how the day should be?? For their unity ceremony, they blew bubbles together (so cute, right?), then we took portraits alllll around their industrial Airbnb. And they turned out so fucking cute.
For their reception, they had a PARTAYYYY at Zero/Zero Bar. They invited all their favorite people, had dinner, took some shots (DUH), had some cake, and danced a little before their streamer sendoff, and it was absolutely perfect for them!!
