Everything You Need to Know to Plan a Montana Elopement at Fairy Lake

Fairy Lake is one of those places that just feels good to be in. It’s located in Bozeman, and I genuinely don’t know if there’s a better Montana elopement location. The mountain views are INSANE, and that, plus the way the light reflects off the water, has me gagged every time.

If this is your dream elopement spot (because why wouldn’t it be?), here’s every single detail, big and small, you need to know!!

Montana Elopement Laws (and Exactly How to Elope in Montana!!)

Since the legal shit comes first, you’ve gotta get your marriage license. Fairy Lake is in Gallatin County, so you have to get your marriage license there, which you can fill out the application for righttt here! Once you do, bring that, both of your IDs, and $53 bucks to the Clerk of District Court’s Office (615 S. 16th Ave., Rm. 302, Bozeman) sometime between Monday and Friday from 8:00 am-2:30 pm to get it. Then, it’s valid right away and must be used within 180 days!!

The good news is that anyone can officiate your wedding in Montana. Strict rules?? We don’t know her!

The Best Time to Elope at Fairy Lake

Okay, TBH, I don’t know how I can ever choose between spring elopements and fall elopements in Montana. Spring gives us lush greens and blooming florals that make Fairy Lake extra whimsical (which I LOVEEE), but fall colors are so damn gorgeous, it could bring a tear to my eye. The weather in both seasons is also 10/10: mild, but not too chilly!

Whatever season you pick, though, a weekday earlier in the morning will give you the most room alllll to yourselves. Beautiful places like this obviously come with crowds, and since you can’t technically reserve a spot here, you have to work around them!! That’s something that, as your destination elopement photographer, I’ve gotchu covered on, so don’t even fret.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope at Fairy Lake?

NOPE, no permit needed!! And trust me: not having to worry about the permitting process is literally such a relief.

How to Celebrate Your Fairy Lake Elopement

Since Fairy Lake is so close to Bozeman, you can celebrate however your little heart desires, queen. A hike in your elopement dress? Love it. There’s a 1.2 mile trail at Fairy Lake. Bar-hopping? Yup, there are SOOO many bars in Bozeman that bring cool vibes (I love Cat’s Paw and Rocking R Bar). Going out to eat? Hell yeah!! I recommend Revelry and Copper

Where to Stay for Your Fairy Lake Elopement

There are so many good places to stay near Fairy Lake if you’re traveling to elope here. Personally, I LOVE Sacajawea Hotel (my FAVE!!) and Gallatin River Lodge. They have the rustic energy that you probably love already if you’re choosing a Montana elopement!!

Why Fairy Lake Makes SUCH a Good Montana Elopement Location

If you still aren’t sold on choosing Fairy Lake for your Montana elopement location, here are a few more of the ten thousand reasons I’m so obsessed with it:

  • It’s secluded and private
  • The views are to die for
  • There’s something about it that just feels romantic
  • It’s an adventure, duh
  • It’s somewhere that actually lets your story and both of your personalities breathe
  • Logistics-wise, it’s actually super easy to plan an elopement here

Who a Montana Elopement is Really Right For

I mean, who doesn’t want a Montana elopement?? And honestly, there are just some couples that this kind of day fits SO well. If the two of you…

  • LOVE a good adventure
  • Feel more at home in nature than indoors or in a big city (love that for you)
  • Probs spend your free time hiking together
  • Want something that’s only you, just for you
  • Want connection over spectacle or performance
  • Are more concerned with a vacay together than spending tons on your wedding

Robyn and Nathaniel’s Hella Romantic Fairy Lake Elopement

Robyn and Nathaniel were THE it couple for their Montana elopement. I mean, I cannot get over how insane these pictures are!! The mountains. The lake. Their LOVE?? I just can’t!! They’re the perfect type of couple to elope at Fairy Lake, and I’ll be thinking about it for life.

I mean, you can already see how damn adorable these two were just from the photos… But the details made it, like, 10x that!! Robyn gifted Nathaniel custom cufflinks with his late dog, which made such a sweet, special detail that I’ll probably be crying about for years. And don’t EVEN get me started on the fact that they read letters that they had their loved ones write them during the ceremony since they decided to elope privately!! Too fucking cute!!
